Scrolling Zillow for a bigger place… in this economy?!

If you're like me and my husband, we are sticking it out in our currently place that we bought during the pandemic until we look like we could be on TLC's Hoarding: Buried Alive. However, this means, we make the most of every nook and cranny we can for storage, being especially careful when it comes to our wine. I won't lie to you, living in a high rise in Chicago is really awesome until you realize that it doesn't come with the natural cave that my friends back in Nebraska have in their homes for their wine. Wait… your realtor didn't highlight this feature to you?! Well, it is that unfinished portion of your basement.

What should you prioritize when storing wine?

This is in priority order based on my experience of drinking a lot of wine, working in wine, and moving a LOT, so it is subjective. However, don't come for me until you've tried to find a home for 150 bottles of wine in a high rise and work in wine for 10 years. Now, on to what you're here for…

  1. Your wine needs to be on its side.

    • Why? Corks dry out! Plus it saves space which is why I up this to #1!

  2. Avoid your wine getting too warm or cold, but especially severe temperature fluctuations.

    • Cave temp is 55 degrees, but don't let wine freeze or boil.

  3. Do not let direct sunlight hit your wine.

    • It likes the dark and will prematurely age with that sun hitting it.

  4. Keep it low(ish) to the ground.

    • Avoid putting it high on top of machines or closets due to vibrations and heat rising. Also, the TRAGEDY if it falls… (this happened to me at 11pm and I had a SEA of red wine from just two bottles of wine falling like 2 feet, so please learn from me)

Feeling unsure? Let's break it down so you can make the most of your space.
